Our Story · The Jaariyah Fellowship
Built for perpetuity.
صدقة جارية
An enduring gift. A responsibility beyond ourselves.
Who we are
We are a core team of Muslim practitioners and institution builders, working alongside a wider community of volunteers, united by one enduring conviction: our time, knowledge, skills, and resources must be invested in work that keeps benefiting people long after we are gone.
We see this as صدقة جارية (sadaqah jaariyah).
Jaariyah is a new initiative, and Cohort I will be our first. We are building a fellowship that combines fortnightly virtual Learning Labs with global immersives, planned for Srebrenica, Istanbul, and Medina, subject to funding commitments. It is designed to form people, not just train them: to build deep relationships, sharpen ethical conviction, and equip leaders to act.
The fellowship is the beginning, not the end. Those who pass through it join an enduring, borderless community of scholars, social entrepreneurs, community leaders, and strategic builders who keep learning from one another and developing initiatives that address meaningful challenges facing the ummah.
As ideas take shape and collaborations mature, we connect promising projects and ventures with mission-aligned investors who can help turn them into sustainable, lasting work.
Our operating model
- 01
Convene
We bring people together through virtual Learning Labs and, where funding allows, immersives that turn ethical traditions into lived practice.
- 02
Cultivate
We nurture an enduring community where fellows stay connected, root themselves in classical Islamic ethical traditions, and anchor their leadership in self-mastery and أدب (adab).
- 03
Collaborate
We create opportunities for members to combine their expertise, networks, and resources around practical challenges and institutional design.
- 04
Catalyze
We bridge high-potential ventures with mission-aligned investors to scale impact without compromising core values.
We are not building a platform for personal recognition, commercial gain, or political alignment. We are building the relationships, capabilities, and pathways through which people can contribute to something larger than themselves.
Our Foundation
Knowledge that benefits
علم نافع
At the heart of our work is the pursuit of علم نافع ('ilm nāfi'), beneficial knowledge. Knowledge should do more than inform: it should shape judgment, strengthen character, equip people to act, and contribute to lasting good. It is owned by the ummah, a river flowing through every land and every tongue.
Our living inheritance
Twenty-six cities. No borders. One river of knowledge.
Across centuries, these cities nurtured scholarship, service and institution building. Knowledge is owned by the ummah - a river flowing through every land and every tongue.
Baghdad
The House of Wisdom and the great translation movement.
They drank from cities they never saw - the river carried them.
- Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
- Al-Khwarizmi
- Al-Kindi
- Junayd al-Baghdadi
"Knowledge flowed through every land and every tongue - owned by no empire, no country, no tribe; held in common by the ummah. We are scholars and builders: let us build and reimagine. Enter that current, so that what you learn keeps giving in perpetuity."
Rooted in the Deen. Grounded in reality.
We draw deeply from Islamic intellectual and ethical traditions while engaging honestly with the realities facing the ummah today. We pair scholarly insight, lived experience, and systems-aware thinking to craft responses that are faithful to our values and effective in the real world.
You don't need a title to be a scholar. You need to read deeply and care what you do with what you learn.
Sincerity through accountability
Public work can easily be compromised by ego, the pursuit of status, and diseases of the heart. To safeguard our نية (niyyah), we cultivate sincere counsel (نصيحة), intellectual honesty, mutual accountability, and shared responsibility. We challenge one another constructively so the mission always comes before personal credit.
Building for what outlives us
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught:
“When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (صدقة جارية), beneficial knowledge from which people continue to benefit (علم ينتفع به), and a righteous child who prays for them.”Sahih Muslim
This hadith defines our responsibility. A fellowship matters for what participants build afterward. A community matters for the collective good its relationships make possible. A venture matters for the enduring value it creates.
We want to build a movement where beneficial knowledge is shared, capable people find one another, and institutions grow far beyond the involvement of their founders. The ambition is not to be remembered. It is to build something that keeps benefiting people when we are no longer there to build it ourselves.
Our approach to funding
We approach this work as an أمانة (amānah), a trust. Our core team and volunteers contribute for the pleasure of Allah, seeking their reward in the الآخرة (Ākhirah) rather than financial gain.
We are at the beginning of this journey and are currently speaking with prospective sponsors. The shape of Cohort I will follow the support we secure.
- Removing barriers
- We work to ensure that no capable fellow is kept out by cost. We rely on sponsorships from individuals and mission-aligned organizations to fund the jaariyah experience for those who need it, and on in-kind partners to extend what we can offer.
- Adaptive delivery - immersives depend on funding commitments
- The Learning Labs are virtual and open on a pay-as-you-can basis. If we cannot secure funding in full, we will run fewer immersives, or deliver the whole fellowship virtually, so that access to knowledge stays open to all, إن شاء الله.
- Venture support
- We keep a clear distinction between funding educational and community-building spaces and investing in mature commercial or social ventures, with full transparency and careful stewardship of resources.
A du'ā' for the work ahead
We begin with humility, knowing that good intentions must be matched by disciplined effort and a constant readiness to check our hearts. The success of our work rests on the acceptance and mercy of Allah.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا
Allāhumma innī as'aluka 'ilman nāfi'an, wa rizqan ṭayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.
“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good and lawful provision, and deeds that are accepted.”
May Allah purify our intentions, place barakah in our time and talents, unite us in what is good, and let the knowledge, relationships, and institutions that emerge from this work become sources of enduring benefit for the ummah. آمين
